Re: Chretien Surprised By Rare Royal Honour, July 14.
This article notes that former prime minister Jean Chretien is the third Canadian to be named to the Order of Merit. In fact, he is the fourth.
In addition to former prime ministers William Lyon Mackenzie King and Lester Pearson, who are named, Canadian neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield received the honour in 1953. He was the first person Her Majesty appointed to the Order.
